WHOIS or ID protection for a domain name which is also known as Privacy Protection, is a service provided most domain registrars. According to ICANN (Internet Coalition for Assigned Names and Numbers) regulations, all domain names must have valid entries for the First/Last name, phone number and e-mail address. This information will be available publicly to everyone.
This regulation however opens a back door for abusers, spamers, fraudsters, identity thieves etc to do with that information whatever they see fit since everyone in the world can gain access to that information by doing a WHOIS query. That is where the WHOIS protection comes in play.
Why do I need a WHOIS Privacy Protection for my domain names?
WHOIS Domain Privacy/ID Protection provides you with the ability to "hide" your personal or company contact details and they will be replaced by protected information. This way you will be shielding yourself against possible spam messages, identity theft or domain hijacking.
WHOIS Privacy Protection is not available for all TLD's.
WHOIS Privacy Protection is available for the following TLDs: .COM, .NET, .ORG, .WE.BS, .INFO, .BIZ, .ME, .TV, .CC, .ASIA
